A visitor to the American Redneck Society website, whose e-mail address included “Tom Sawyer” as part of his address, had this to say about American rednecks.

“American rednecks are homegrown terrorists. They terrorize educated Americans with their self-righteous and usually highly uneducated perspective. The American redneck will not be able to compete in the international scene. Our jobs are going overseas because rednecks cannot compete.”

This e-mail made my redneck blood boil!! What follows is my reply to this redneck-hater. (I apologize for the length of my reply.)

I find your e-mail to be ironic in the context of your e-mail address, whether that e-mail address reflects your real name or an alias. In many ways, your comments represent a misguided and inflammatory generalization of rednecks in much the same way that Tom Sawyer’s character was impugned and misunderstood in Mark Twain’s great novel. As the town gossips said in this great American novel, “[Tom] would be President, yet, if he escaped hanging.” This is to say, some of Tom Sawyer’s behavior earned the negative regard that many folk had of him. Yet, for those who really understood the true character of Tom, they saw the makings of a great American, so great that he had the makings of a President.

You start your e-mail with an incredibly hateful generalization: “American rednecks are homegrown terrorists.” I will start by agreeing with you in part. I fully recognize that there are American, homegrown terrorists . . . some of whom are probably rednecks. But, to conclude that all American rednecks are homegrown terrorists is as absurd as saying that all Americans are homegrown terrorists. You see, I lived in Munich Germany for several years in the early 70’s and learned that many Germans regarded ALL Americans as “ugly Americans” because of their personal experience with SOME Americans who truly earned the pejorative moniker. Even after I developed an understanding and a sensitivity as to why some Germans regarded Americans as “ugly,” I never stopped being proud to be an American, proud of the principles upon which this great country was founded and proud of the role that Americans played in the rebuilding of post WWII Germany. You see, my sampling of “Americans” was much broader and more representative. I knew that just because there was a very small minority of “ugly Americans” there was no reason to paint all Americans with that same broad brush.

Your e-mail does a very good job of reinforcing the reasons for the American Redneck Society. Look at our website more carefully. Read the creed of the American Redneck Society. Our members would agree that:

1.	Owning a gun doesn’t make you a terrorist. Most American rednecks embrace the 2nd amendment and would use that constitutional right to protect their house and family from terrorists and criminals, whether foreign or domestic.

2.	To those who hate America, patriotic Americans can come across as self-righteous. American rednecks are proud of this nation’s heritage and the principles upon which the United States of America was founded. For those who regard core American values with contempt, the American Redneck Society offers no apology . . . whether you think we’re self-righteous or not.

3.	The demographic of the American redneck is much broader than your ignorant, narrow stereotype that American rednecks are highly uneducated. Some are highly educated doctors, lawyers, accountants and preachers of the Gospel. Some are hard-working plumbers, carpenters, masons and assembly-line workers. In short, there are rednecks of all IQ’s, professions and education levels.

4.	Give American rednecks a level playing field whereby foreign workers and commerce aren’t subsidized and protected by our Federal government’s foreign and immigration policies, and we’ll successfully compete with any nation and with any people.

I can’t thank you enough for reminding me why the American Redneck Society exists.

Rob

The premise of Jeff Foxworthy’s redneck routine is that many people are rednecks, but don’t know it. His “you might be a redneck if” routine helps folks all over the country figure out if they’re a redneck or not.

February 6, 2011 marks the date of Super Bowl #45 (go Steelers!) and the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ronald Reagan. As I was thinking about the late, great Ronald Reagan, I asked myself: was Ronald Reagan a redneck? I remember him in a cowboy hat. I remember him riding a horse. He hated communism. He loved America and all that America stood for. Fans and foes alike characterized him as ignorant or unintelligent. He was a Nascar fan (Ronald Reagan was at Daytona Beach for his pal Richard Petty’s 200th and last victory).

All of these facts tell me that Ronald Reagan was a redneck . . . or like the rednecks that need Jeff Foxworthy’s help, someone who was a redneck, but may not have realized it. Then I read an article that convinced me that Ronald Reagan was a redneck through and through. In describing who his mantle will fall upon some day, James Pricht of the Washington Times said this:

“Reagan’s mantle will fall on the politician who has faith in the fundamental goodness of the American people, who’s willing to trust them to make their own choices, and who understands that the terrible power of the state must be leashed at all times by the principles of the Constitution.”

Was Ronald Regan a redneck? Hell yes!!!!!!!!!

Whether they know it or not, rednecks represent an incredible economic force, both from the standpoints of productivity and consumer spending. Rednecks spend a far greater percentage of their income on hard goods and big-ticket items — especially those that are made in the USA — than their more affluent city-dwelling counterparts. They are pumping a huge amount of money into our economy by buying second vehicles, motorcycles, tractors, trailers, bass boats, fishing gear, dirt bikes, four-wheelers, power tools, guns, ammo, and on and on and on — tangible hard goods that translate into jobs for American citizens in the critical manufacturing sector.

The far-richer-on-paper “urbanites” are shoveling their money into not only exorbitant taxes, but also the coffers of mortgage companies, insurance firms, and purveyors of overpriced consumables. Any economist worth his salt will agree that a strong manufacturing and industrial sector is the key to real, lasting economic stability.

One of the values that a redneck holds true is the concept of individual freedom. The Covenanters of 17th century Scotland prescribed to this ideology and are the true founders of the “Redneck” movement. The Covenanters rejected the Church of England as their sanctioned church. In doing so, they also refused to be ruled by bishops which was the conventional method of church government. Many of the self determined Covenanters signed documents with their own blood that rejected episcopacy and demanded a Presbyterian Church government. To show their allegiance in this movement the Covenanters began wearing red pieces of cloth around their necks and were appropriately called “Rednecks.” Out of defiance, the original redneck was born.
